She lie there hands resting lightly on her chest, like a perfect angel ready for what was coming next. Her body had become completely numb with the exception of a sharp pain anytime she took in a breath. A soft smile rested on her cheeks as Lucee sat beside her. Raising one of her hands shakily she rested it on Lucee's cheek, "I'm sorry I failed you sissy..." she took in a breath and let out a raspy cough, "but now you can be happy and that makes me happy." The blood was beginning to fill her lungs, each cough bringing up more blood than the last. In this moment, Melanee knew, the innocent can never last. Looking into her sister's beautiful eyes now full of tears, Melanee quickly wiped the blood from her lips and let out a raspy sigh. She knew Lucee wouldn't take this very well, and although Lucee was older, Melanee felt it was her responsibility to make the inevitable as easy as she could. "Why are you crying sissy... I'm just sleepy, I'm going to sleep now and you can watch over me like when we were little," she nodded to give her sister encouragement, "Wake me up, when September ends."
It was then she saw Matteo now at her side, her closest friend she had in her short life yet it seemed as though she had known him for an eternity. A promising friendship that was bound to blossom into something more, Melanee held her hand out to take Matteo's, "As my memory rests, never forget what I've lost..." tears began to pool in her own eyes now, "Wake me up... when September ends..." Breathing was becoming harder and her death was starting to sink in. Melanee wasn't ready to go, she wasn't ready to leave her best friend or her sister. Melanee wasn't ready to leave behind this family that had taken her in, she had so much life ahead of her. Lucee and Matteo needed her, but she could never be there for them now... summers would come and winters would pass and all that would be left of her would be the settling dirt on her grave.
The pressure on her chest rose as the oxygen to her lungs decreased with each breath. She began to feel as though she was drowning with each breath she took in. Her fingers grew cold, the blood leaving her fingertips making its way into her lungs or out of her chest through the handful of bullet wounds. He breaths grew shallower by the second, blood draining from her once warm cheeks but her smile remained. She felt like maybe she had fulfilled her purpose, allowing those she now loved to live. Sometimes it just took certain people less time to figure that out. And although her time was coming Melanee couldn't help but be happy in her last moments, she was surrounded by the family she'd always wished for. The air grew cold and Melanee's eyes grew heavy, she choked back her blood and closed her eyes, "Wake me up, when..."
But Melanee never finished her sentence, her body grew limp and her last breath settled in the thinning air around her body. As she passed, her soul lifted from her body resembling a ghostly version of herself free of blood or any other evidence of the pain or suffering her life had brought her. Although they couldn't see her and her time here was short, Melanee went to each of her loved ones and gave them each a soft hug starting with Rion making her way to Apsenniel. Matteo's was particularly hard, and she lingered a little more than she should have. She had a million things she wished she could tell him, but this wouldn't be the last time she saw him. Finally came Lucee... the hardest of them all, Melanee held her sister tightly still frozen over her still body, before turning to take deaths hand. All too quickly her time had come, Melanee rose to her feet and smiled down at Lucee. Although it may not see like it, things would be ok. Mel whispered in Lucee's ear one last time before crossing over, "See you in September sissy..."
