There was a slight chill in the air, but the sun held high bringing an essence of warmth to her cheeks. Spring was in full bloom with the new birds chirping near the canal and the subtle smell of the lilies and marigolds that found their way to her with each calm breeze. The world carried on with business as usual, the waiters in the small french cafe making their rounds to each table. The sounds of breakfast tea made apparent by clinking porcelain and small chitter chatter from the other patrons. Yet she sat alone, her tea had gone cold and the croissant had begun to stale. Off in the distance there were several small boats docked on the edges of the canal, each with spare crates that held mostly produce from the farms just outside the city. The majority of the crates had been taken from the bateaux and placed along the sidewalks so that the humble farmers could sell their wares. The strawberries caught her attention, each delicately stacked on top of the other. They were particularly vibrant this time of year, ripe and fresh from the vine. Strawberries were his favorite she thought, as her mind traveled to a distant memory of the two of them walking along a market much like this one. Her body went through the motions, her hand loosely held the small silver spoon, string a tea she didn't intend on drinking. She did her bed to hold back a sob but it persisted in a quiet hiccup. The spoon slipped from her grasp and clattered against the porcelain cup which yanked her from her daydream. Though her head remained still, her eyes searched franticly around her looking for anyone who might have recognized her. This life had brought her constant fear and agony, while the years had changed her some, there were still many who sought to take her life on the basis of an ancient curse placed on her family.
That's why she had to leave him. Their short four years together they had spent on the run. Much like she had for the majority of her life, but they were the highlight of the hundred something she had on this Earth. Not once had he complained, batting away her concerns as if they were unwarranted. But the humans had upped their game and she couldn't keep Jeremy safe. Her palm brushed against the piece of parchment she had placed on the table, but her eyes traced their way to the diamond that reflected the sunlight into her eyes. It had been luck that she should run into Lucee after leaving Jeremy asleep in their tiny apartment. Lucee explained how she would go to him and take him to his family. Her and Annie both could sense the tension rising amongst the humans, Jeremy would need his family to shield him from the negative energy. All that remained was the letter with her explanation. She reached for the fountain pen and searched for the words that wouldn't come. What she did manage to scrawl across the pages wouldn't be enough to ease his or her pain but it would have to do. In the end all she hoped for was that he would forgive her, and although she would love him for the rest of her pitiful life, she hoped he could find a love to replace the one she had thrown away. Tears began to fill her eyes and she had to bring her hand to cover her mouth. Once she regained her composure she slipped the ring from her finger and tucked it carefully in the envelope along with the letter. This was it, the last contact she would ever have with him. It was all more than she could bare, but she had drawn enough attention to herself. She placed francs under the tea saucer to pay for the service she hadn't partook in and she left. The letter would find its way into the first mail bin she came across and a few days later the immortal island in the hands of Jeremy Rioz, the love of her existence. It would be all that was left of her before she would go back to being a mystery in history books.
