The giggles echoed against the walls of the stone lined, clammy chamber. The screams began drowning out the faint dripping sound that had once overwhelmed the deadly silent room, and following the screams were more childish echos. Clasping her hands tightly against her ears, Reast could feel her compressing her own head with all of her might. The screams that followed the giggles, they were that of her next victim, much rather they were her own. The tickling sensation that scratched the back of her throat reminded Reast what it was like to scream, what it was like to feel true pain. Curling her body tightly into the corner, Reast felt the damp wall close in around her as her voice continued to bounce off the walls of the room. There was something familiar about this pain, something about this fear, confusion...Scrunching her eyes tightly shut, Reast buried her face in her knee that were curled up into her chest.
The world around her warped, the memories she had blocked out began dragging her back in. Tearing her from her reality, these memories began pulling her down memory lane. All the way back to her childhood, to that house in the forgotten woods. The world quickly changed, as Reast fell into the trance of her own memories, as Reast fell asleep.
Beaming green eyes blinked open slowly as Reast found herself searching the forest for a familiar face. Blond strands of hair twisted down her small framed shoulders, and the baby hair began sticking to her face. No older than seven, Reast found herself searching for someone in a forest that very much not allowed. It wasn’t until she found the hollow tree just beyond a flower filled field that Reast no longer seemed lost. Pushing past the small flowers, Reast was careful not to damage their fragile petals. They had just began to cover the balance within her trainings, and while Reast still wasn’t entirely understand how balance could apply to her, she still listened with great interest. There was a circle of life, and in order for one to survive, they all had to be willing to give. Tip-toeing towards the entrance of the hollow tree, Reast took a slow inhale through her nostrils. Her chest slowly raised as she held the air deep within her stomach. Pressing her body tightly against the tree, Reast began inching herself closer and closer towards the entrance until finally, she had made it. Jumping in front of the entrance, Reast raised her hands high and made her finger rigid like claws. “Boo!” She squealed but giggle interrupted any success of being frightening. The girl inside, no older than nine giggled as she clashed her hands together, filling the hollow tree with an echoing applause. Skipping up to the overgrown mushrooms within the tree, Reast used them as a table. With imaginary cups, and crumpets, the two young girls giggled danced in the air around them. The world they had grown up in had been a cold one, but at least here they could be anything they wanted. The happiness of such freedom quickly faded to darkness as the rain came pouring down, and Reast found herself running. Reast was sixteen now, and things had changed.
The forest was something that she had always known, something she declared her home at an early age. But the vines that swarmed around her in attempts to engulf her body weren't of the forest she remembered. The vines swung from the high ranging trees in her direction as she took off through the forest. The rain poured from the skies above, and the wind brought each raindrop smashing against her dampened face. With her feet patting against the wet mud beneath her, she could feel the cold mud curling between each of her toes. It was slowing her down, the entire forest was turning on her. Ducking beneath a quick swinging branch, the young girl barely caught her balance before she felt the swift impact of another branch smashing into the core of her small frame. Falling backwards into the mud, she felt as the pain coursed through every portion of her body. Her body screamed in agony as she pushed herself in an upright position. The small framed body begging her to give in, to give up, but that was one thing she was incapable of doing. Scrambling back to her feet, she paused for but a moment to wipe the blood from her face before taking off in a dash once more. The vines and tree branches began blending in with the crisp night air, and differentiating became something of a challenge. Danger and delight were beginning to morph into one. The wind barely whistled through the trees called for her, daring her to turn around and abandon her journey but she refused. She would escape from this hell. She would escape from this monster that was herself.
Coming to a halt, Reast eyes focused on the girl standing before her. Both girls stood taller, stronger than they had in previous encounters. With closed fist, Reast took the first step towards the girl she once called friend, sister, Teacher L…
Shivering herself awake, Reast slowly looked up from her lap. Pressing her hand against the wall for support, Reast rose to her feet. There was an eerie silence, a whisper of darkness that only those of the shadows would be capable of catching up with her. The dreams, the sudden surge of balance, the stars...L had returned. The shadows of the room swarmed around Reast, slowly blanketing her body until there was nothing left but darkness. Compressing and crushing her body into the ground, the shadows dispersed in every direction. Using the shadows, Reast shadow stepped to the oceans cliff sides. The shadows all swarmed in one location, and as they began disappearing, Reast was able to step from the shadows once more. Focusing her eyes on the dwindling stars still lingering with the shadowed sky, Reast pressed her lips tightly together. Then the giggles began echoing in her mind once more. “Game on L.”
